Science College

STEM events (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

The national focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) encourages young people to engage in these areas to address the skills shortage in these industries.

Over the next few months over 800 students from Brinsworth Comprehensive School and its feeder schools will be involved in a huge variety of fun and inspiring events and activities based around engineering. We are extremely pleased to have been allocated funding from the Institution of Engineering & Technology to promote engineering. Working with local companies and organisations the school aims to enhance student’s perception of engineering and develop their interest in this as a future career.

Activities will include; building wind turbines with the Smallpeice Trust; making bath bombs and soaps; learning about DNA; a very challenging STEM day through Attainment Partnership; a forensic workshop through Aspire More Able; building a 12 metre suspension bridge with the help from the Institution of Civil Engineers and designing and testing bobsleighs with Mike Maddox, who represented Great Britain for seven years in the Skeleton Bobsleigh event.

The school will also be taking students out to a variety of companies to promote engineering as well as hosting a careers speed networking event to promote the different routes into engineering.
